The Engineering Process

The engineering process is a set of steps engineers employ to create functional products and processes. It is a process that is highly iterative that can be used to design prototypes and improve upon existing solutions. It’s also an excellent method to develop problem-solving skills and to develop a “design under constraints” mindset. The process of engineering design is a lot like the scientific method, but engineers use creativity and design.

Determine the Cause

The first step is to identify the requirements needed to run the success of the project. This requires a lot of thinking and the engineer should often consider the constraints (e.g. available time, materials tools, etc.)) when generating solutions. This also requires an engineer to evaluate all possible solutions by identifying their strengths and weaknesses, before picking the most suitable solution to accomplish the objective of the project.

Create Ideas

Engineers can choose to employ different methods to generate solutions including brainstorming and discussion to CAD modeling in 2D and animation. The solutions created can be visualized and compared to the requirements of the problem to determine the most appropriate solution.

Once the final solution is determined, it’s time to design the prototype. It can be as simple sketching on a piece of paper or as complex as an actual prototype made with CAD software. This step gives the engineer the opportunity to test the final product and determine if it is in line with the intended goals.
